Leonard was one of nine children to a single mother. He played college football for the South Carolina State Bulldogs and was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Colts. One of his older brothers is the former NFL player, Anthony Waters.

In November 2017, Leonard proposed to his girlfriend Kayla and they had a baby girl Mia Leonard in March 2019.
